The Musée du Louvre or The Louvre Museum in English is one of the largest and most impressive museums in the world. It’s not only the most visited museum in the world but it’s also a national landmark and a historic monument.
The museum is housed in the Palais du Louvre (Louvre Palace), a former royal residence, which emerged as a medieval fortress and slowly evolved into a public art museum during the French Revolution and was enriched by the results of looting during the Napoleonic wars.
Notre Dame de Paris ('Our Lady of Paris' in French), also known as the Notre Dame Cathedral, is one of Paris’ most famous landmarks and is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in the world.
Notre Dame de Paris was one of the first Gothic cathedrals to be constructed during the Gothic period. Its sculptures and stained glass show the heavy influence of naturalism and Notre Dame de Paris was among the first buildings in the world to use the flying buttress, arched exterior supports.
There were problems with the initial design as after construction had begun, the thinner walls were built higher and higher (as is popular in gothic architecture) and stress fractures began to appear as the walls were pushed outwards. The cathedrals architects combated this by building the supports around the outside wall and the pattern was continued in later additions to the structure.
The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous landmarks in Paris and is the lynchpin of the historic axis, a succession of monuments and thoroughfares on a route which run from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace right through to the Grande Arche de la Défense.
The triumphal arch is a symbol of honour for all of those that have fought for France, in particular during the Napoleonic wars. Inscribed on the inside and top of the arc are the names of the generals and the wars that have been fought.
The arc was built by Jean-François Chalgrin who took his inspiration from the Roman Arch of Titus but transcended the original with his outsized dimensions (the arc is approximately about 50m high, 45m long and 22m wide). The Arc was completed in 1833.
The Eiffel Tower is the icon of France, a national symbol as well as a wonder of the engineering and design worlds. As well as being the tallest building in Paris, it is also the most visited monument in the entire world, with millions of people climbing it each year.
The tower stands at 324 m (1,063 ft) tall and is a vast structure of exposed latticework supports which are made of puddle iron and was originally built for the Paris Exposition of 1889. The design was chosen from 700 proposals which were submitted for a design competition but it was the French structural engineer, Gustave Eiffel, who submitted the radical Eiffel Tower design.

The annual calendar of events in Paris is packed full of events; from fashion shows to classical music concert to the legendary Tour de France. Whatever month you’re visiting in, there will always be something special on the calendar to see.
Staying in Paris during times of celebrations is a great way to get a taste of the real Paris. Many of the events are centred around three particular areas; the Carrousel de Louvre, Parc Floral and the Champs Elysees.
In January celebrations of the New Year are rife throughout the city. For something different take a look at the annual Viennese New Year’s Day concert; a parody of Vienna’s Musikverein by Opera Comique held at the Salle Favart. For something a little livelier visit Paris’ Quartier Chinois (Chinese Quarter) for parades, food and colourful live entertainment.
In February book and wine lovers descend upon the Carrousel du Louvre for the Bibliophile Fair and Great Wines Fair (held simultaneously). Here you will find some rare books and some of the finest French wines, all in one place.
If you fancy staying in the area close to the Carrousel de Louvre, which holds a number of events then consider the wonderfully luxurious Saint James & Albany Hotel-Spa, close to the Carrousel du Louvre and Champs Elysees. With exclusive spa facilities for hotel guests and an indoor swimming pool, this is an excellent place to relax after some sightseeing and in a brilliant location. Paris Fashion Week is held in early March at the Carrousel de Louvre. Join fashion enthusiasts for the last leg of the worldwide tour with some of the most recognised names in fashion showing off their latest designs.
Paris nightlife is much like everything else in Paris; diverse and entertaining, and you will always find something for everyone.
Avoid the touristy areas of Champs-Elysées and Trocadéro at night and head for somewhere with a little more Parisian flavour. You will find that the distinction between a cafe and a bar is rather blurred in Paris and you will find that most are open late, especially in the more popular areas. The Oberkampf district in Ménilmontant is a popular haunt for Parisians. Visit the legendary Café Charbon on rue de Oberkampf, a street now overflowing with bars. It’s a spacious café and reigning late night favourite. Or perhaps try out Au Chat Noir, a cafe-bar that boasts a rather eclectic program of music, theatre and art and you will find a distinctly cosmopolitan audience.
Disneyland Paris was the third theme park in the Disney family to be opened, after the Florida based Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Resort, and continues in much the same vein.
Children will love Disneyland Paris, there’s no doubt about it and with 15 million visitors each year its fast becoming Paris’ most visited landmark.
The park has three areas: Disneyland Park, the original Magic Kingdom and the area with most of the big rides including Space Mountain and the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster; Walt Disney Studios Park, where you get the chance to immerse yourselves in the technology behind Disney, from the drawing through to the special effects. You can also meet all the Disney characters, walk alongside Mickey and Minnie and get your photo taken with your favourite characters.
